Mkomazi National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a hidden gem nestled between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains, forming a vital ecological link between the Sahel and the savannah. Covering over 3,200 square kilometers, Mkomazi offers a unique and uncrowded safari experience with stunning semi-arid landscapes, rare wildlife, and excellent birding opportunities.
Originally established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to national park status in 2006, Mkomazi is home to an incredible diversity of species, including the endangered black rhino and African wild dog, both protected through special conservation programs in the park. It is one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can observe rhino in a controlled sanctuary setting.
Mkomazi’s open plains and sparse bushland are reminiscent of Kenya’s Tsavo West, with which it shares a border. It is also home to large herds of oryx, gerenuk, giraffes, zebras, and elephants, and over 450 species of birds, including hornbills, ostriches, and migratory species.
